Chapter 13: Day Thirty-One

I put Cas in his father's chair at one in the morning, and he let me.

He sat down slowly, in his Mass suit, with his hands on the worn wooden arms.

The kitchen was dark except for the light over the stove.

His brothers had gone to bed with their faces still wet.

"Ren," he said. "I can't sit here."

"You can sit here with me."

I stood between his knees in the black dress I had worn to the vigil Mass.

I took his tie in both hands and pulled the knot loose.

I drew the length of it out from under his collar and dropped it on the table.

"Hands on the arms of the chair," I said. "If you lift them, I stop."

His fingers closed over the wood until the knuckles went white.

"That's what I want," he said.

"Good. Don't move them."

I undid his collar button, and the next, and the next.

His chest rose under my hands, broad and gray-haired and hot.

I pushed the shirt off his shoulders and let it hang from his elbows.

I kissed the hollow of his throat, and he made a sound he had never made in daylight.

"Rent," I said against his skin.

He went still.

"Rule two," I said. "Nobody says it in bed. You paid in the morning, you said."

"It's one o'clock."

"It's morning. Your fine, Cas."

I straightened up and looked at him.

"You talk like a man billing by the word," I said. "Tonight you talk. Tell me what you'd do if your hands were free."

His jaw worked.

"I'd have your dress off."

"I'm taking it off."

I reached behind me, drew the zipper down, and shrugged the dress to the floor.

I stood in front of him in my slip and stockings, and his eyes went down me and came back up.

"Go on," I said.

"I'd put my mouth on your breasts until you told me to stop."
