Chapter 15: Easy Money

For a moment Shen Ke did not understand the sentence.

Then he did, all at once, and the corridor was very quiet.

"Where did you hear that?" he said.

"At the kitchen door, on the third night." Hanzhou's face had not changed. "You were telling the old master about your employer. He's easy money, you said. A cold fish who couldn't tell when you were faking."

"Hanzhou."

"It was good information. It told me exactly what the arrangement was." He unfolded his arms. "I have conducted myself accordingly. I docked an hour. I priced the work."

"You were in my bed last night. Nobody was pricing anything."

"I did not know which part of you was real." The level voice cracked on the last word, once, and mended. "I still do not."

Shen Ke stared at him.

He thought of the night in Lamp Lane, of noodles and a narrow bed and a man holding his hand in a hospital corridor.

He thought, with a sick lurch, that all of that had been done by someone who believed he was being sold it.

"I said it to calm him down," said Shen Ke. His voice shook.
