Chapter 14: The Witness

"He is ill," Ansgar said at once. "Honored Court, I beg you."

"He is an Alpha of the Court," the Speaker said, "and he asks to be heard. Take the staff, Alpha Eckert."

Halvard crossed the floor with the whole room watching.

He took the staff from her hand, set his feet apart and faced the horseshoe.

He didn't shake.

I think it was the only time I ever saw him not shake in front of his father.

"I bound Cassia Coleridge three years ago," he said. "I stood on Eckert Ridge and said the vow, 'no lie between us,' and I lied. This is what I lied about."

Then he told it.

He told it much as he had told it on the hill, the study door and the cold voice.

The sentence his father had said to him on the night of the binding.

"He said the best place to keep a witness is in a family."

A pack Alpha on the right bench turned his head very slowly to look at Ansgar.

"He said, 'Put her under our wards, where her scent can't be tracked, and under our law, where a bound wife may not testify against her husband's house.' He said that if I refused, there were other ways to keep her quiet. A car on a mountain road, he meant. I knew what he meant."
