Chapter 20: In Line
"Who asked you to?" I said.
"Nobody." Nathaniel pulled his sleeve down over the cotton ball. "That's the point."
He had something in his other hand. He kept turning it over in his fingers.
A bronze coin, worn smooth.
"Three years sober," he said, when he saw me look. "Last month."
"Congratulations."
"I'm not here for that."
He took one step into the hall and stopped.
"I said both of them," he said. "In the courtyard, with the letters coming down. I said if you ever needed a kidney, it was yours."
"I remember."
"I meant it."
"I didn't want it then. I don't want it now."
"It isn't yours to want, Natalie. It's mine to give."
I laughed. It came out tired.
"That's what you said about my signature."
He flinched.
But he didn't leave.
"If you're a match," I said, "I'll still say no."
"Then say it when the results come in. Not before."
The doors behind me swung open.
Ethan came out of the OR corridor still in his paper cap, pulling off his mask.
He saw Nathaniel and stopped beside me.
Close. Not touching.
The two of them looked at each other for a long moment.
