Chapter 8: Get Tested

I looked at the sugar on the table.

Then I looked at her.

"You forgot something, Camille."

"What?"

"I'm the one holding the microphone after he's done."

She laughed and stood up.

She slid my phone back across the table, still switched off.

"See you Saturday. Wear something nice. You'll be on every front page."

The bell over the door jingled behind her.

Ethan dropped into her empty seat.

His face was dark.

"I heard every word."

"It's not proof. It's your word and mine against hers."

"It's enough for me."

He looked at the spilled sugar.

"When Maeve said eight hundred thousand, you didn't even blink. Like you'd heard it before."

I switched my phone back on and didn't answer.

He didn't push.

That night I signed a month-to-month lease on a studio four blocks from St. Brigid's.

One room. A radiator that clanked. A mattress on the floor.

It cost almost a third of my savings.

It was the first place in five years that was only mine.

At ten there was a knock.

I opened the door on the chain.

Nathaniel stood in the hallway with a bottle of wine and a bag from the Italian place we used to love.

He looked tired. His tie was gone.

"Can I come in?"

"No."

"Natalie. Please. Five minutes."

I left the chain on.

He held up the bag like a peace offering.

"Veal, from Luca's. Your favorite."

"It was your favorite. I ordered it because you did."

He set the bag on the hallway floor.

"I want you to come home."

"No."

"Listen to me. Mom's calmed down. I'll fix things with the hospital board. You can keep your little job if you want it."

"My little job."

"Whatever you want. Keep it. I'll put your name on the penthouse. We'll tear up the prenup."

I waited.

I knew there was more.

"Just stand next to me Saturday night," he said. "Smile. Let me make the announcement. We'll get you tested next week, and if you're a match, you give Camille a chance to live."
