Chapter 15: What the Raider Said
The raider lay in the end bed with a leather strap across his chest and his thigh packed in linen.
He was younger than I had expected, with a farmer's hands and a face the color of tallow.
Hester stood over him like a woman guarding the last loaf.
"Tell them what you told me," she said.
"I want my sentence cut," the raider said. "I'm saying it first."
"You'll say it to the Alpha," Torin said, "and he'll decide."
The raider swallowed.
"A man hired us in a tavern on the Highgate road. A gentleman, black coat, smiling all the time. He wore a heavy silver ring, flat on top."
I kept my face still.
My hands, behind my back, were not still at all.
"He gave us each a grey cloak, new, and told us to burn the cairn fold and leave one man to say Coldwater did it. That was me, I think. I think I was the one meant to be left."
"And the knife?"
"A girl brought it to our camp the night before. Small, brown hair under a Redmere cap, gloves on. She had it wrapped in a cloth."
He looked at Torin.
"She said to wear it on my belt where the farmers would see the crest."
Torin did not move.
"Did she say who sent her?"
"No. But she wasn't afraid of the gentleman. He took his orders from someone, I thought, and she knew who."
"The girl came to the infirmary an hour ago," Hester said. "She carried your broth in."
"She said it would help me sleep."
"It would have." Hester's voice shook with temper. "It was wolfsbane in barley water. I smelled it and I poured it down the drain, and I've been sitting on this bed ever since with a knife in my lap."
