Chapter 21: Ronan's Verdict
They had put Linnet in the fort's cold storeroom, with a lamp, a stool and two Redmere riders at the door.
She sat on the stool with her wrists tied in front of her and her wedding gown still on.
The sash was gone.
She looked up when we came in, and for one moment she was exactly the girl who had kissed my cheek at Dunmere.
Then she settled her face, and it was only Linnet.
"Bron. Ronan." She nodded to Torin in the doorway. "Alpha Vaughn. Such a crowd."
"Why?" Ronan said.
He stood in front of her with his sling off and his bad arm hanging at his side.
"You're going to want something grander than the answer."
"Tell me."
"Dunmere's road feeds half the Marches." She said it lightly, to the lamp. "You would never take it. You're too good, Ronan. You'd have shaken hands with Bronwyn's father and let the river trade rot, and left me with a brother who is loved and a pack that is poor."
"So you killed a warden."
"I told them to frighten the gate. I didn't say kill. One of them was careless."
"And my arm?"
"I told them to turn you back." For the first time her voice cracked. "Not to cut you. I never wanted that. I cried because it was true."
Ronan shut his eyes.
"And me?" I said.
She looked at me then.
"The maid was going to do it in the first dance," Linnet said. "You, in Coldwater grey, Vaughn's knife, in front of every pack. Lucian's riders would have arrived a minute too late to save you. Everyone would have seen who held the knife."
I felt Torin shift in the doorway behind me.
I did not move.
