Chapter 7: The Rules
Lorraine Pruitt stepped out of the SUV in her gray cardigan, carrying an umbrella.
Two men in county windbreakers got out behind her.
One of them held a phone up to film.
"Greta, dear," she called across the wet gravel. "Come here, so we can talk like people."
Hollis's hands tightened on my arms.
"Don't," he said, very low.
"I'm not going to," I said.
I stood up on my own legs.
The blue still ran under the skin of my forearms, and I let it.
Then I walked to the fence, with my four men moving up behind me.
Lorraine stopped on the other side of the chain link.
She looked at my hands, and for the first time since I had known her, her smile slipped and came back.
"Oh, you're wonderful," she said. "Oh, I knew it. The county has been waiting for someone like you."
"You've been waiting for someone to put on a list," I said.
"I've been waiting for someone to protect." She lowered her umbrella. "Come to Shelter Four. We'll give you a room and a doctor, and a place at the table when the lights go."
"For how many people?"
"For the people who matter," she said.
It was the first honest thing she had ever said to me.
The man with the phone kept filming.
I turned my head and looked into his lens.
"Everyone's going to see this," I said, loud enough for the whole road. "Shelter Four has two hundred seats and four hundred and ten names. She sold them."
"Greta," said Lorraine, patiently.
"Ask her who didn't pay," I said.
