Chapter 24: Haint Blue
The porch swing took all three of us if nobody moved, and nobody wanted to.
It was a June evening, hot and green, and the ceiling over our heads glowed haint blue in the last of the light.
The marsh ticked with cicadas.
I sat in the middle in my old cotton shirt with a bare thigh over each of their laps.
Rhett's beard was in my neck, and Boone's mouth was on my knee.
They had come in off the boat at five, salted and sunburned.
Eleven hundred pounds of whites were iced down at the old captain's dock, and a check was in Rhett's pocket.
Rhett had walked through my front door without knocking, because he had a key.
I had loved that so much I had made them wait for supper.
"Doc," he said against my skin. "You're thinking."
"I'm looking at my ceiling," I said.
"It's still blue."
"It'll be blue when we're dead."
"That's the idea," Boone said.
I laughed, and the swing rocked.
Rhett's hand slid under the hem of my shirt and flattened on my stomach.
Boone's mouth drifted up the inside of my thigh.
I did not hurry them.
I had learned in four months that two men like these could be slow, if I let them.
"Take it off me," I said.
Rhett drew the shirt over my head.
The air was warm on my skin, and the swing creaked in the chain, and both of them looked.
I had stopped feeling small in front of them.
Now I only felt looked at, and glad.
Boone slid off the swing onto his knees on the boards.
He spread my thighs over his shoulders, with Rhett holding my back against his chest, and he put his mouth on me.
He was slow.
He licked me in long, soft strokes, and sucked my clit between his lips, and hummed.
