Chapter 19: The Pale Wolf
The Beta walked down the aisle between the chairs.
People leaned away from him as he passed.
He stopped in the open space before the Council Mother's chair, ten feet from me.
He didn't look at me.
He didn't look at Ansel either.
"Sit down," Ansel said quietly. "This isn't your business."
"It's all my business," the Beta said. "That's the trouble."
He took a key out of his pocket. A big old iron key on a leather loop.
He held it up so the hall could see it.
"That's the cellar door," he said. "I drew the bolt at six tonight."
Ansel took a step toward him.
"Alpha Crowe," the Council Mother said, without raising her voice. "Stay where you are."
He stayed.
The Beta turned to face her.
"I'm the one who went for Coral Faulk behind the boathouse," he said. "Harvest Run, five years ago. It was me."
The noise in the hall was like a wave hitting rocks.
The Council Mother lifted her cane an inch, and it died.
"Go on," she said.
"Ansel told me to." The Beta's voice was flat and steady, like he was reading a list. "Two days before. He said the Dacey girl had to go, and Coral had a way to do it. He said nobody would ever believe a Beta did it on his own."
"Liar," Ansel said.
"Coral picked the night." He still hadn't looked at her. "She picked the place. She came to me behind the boathouse in a sleeveless dress and held her arms out." His throat moved. "She said, 'Deep enough to show. Make it deep enough to show.'"
