Chapter 13: Free

Garreth's POV

The quiet stretched out, and I have never known anything like it.

For eighteen years there had been a second voice in my head, a low steady pull toward whoever stood above me in the chain.

I had stopped hearing it around the age of twenty.

Now it was gone, and the silence where it had been was so large that I was afraid to move.

I knelt on the black floor of the Oath Hall with my hands flat on the stone.

Marlis knelt in front of me, with her hand on my face.

"Garreth. Say something."

"I don't know what's mine."

She went still.

"What do you mean?"

"Anything. What I want. What I would have done." I made myself look up. "You read what was wound round my cord."

"Yes," she said.

"Then you know I was told to keep you close."

"I know."

"Some of it was that." I said it flat, because there was no kind way. "The first nights at the Yard. Standing between you and the gate. I can't tell you how much, Marlis. I don't have the means to tell. It was one cord, and it had my name on it, and I never learned where it ended."
