Chapter 4: Night Drill

He walked me out into the Yard, where nobody could hear.

The moon was down behind the fort wall, and frost lay on everything.

Commander Stane stopped under the lantern at the corner of the drill ground and stood with his arms folded.

I stood with my arms folded back at him.

"I don't know what you think you saw," I said.

"Morcant."

"The cold slowed me. My knees were stiff."

"Your knees were fine." He said it without heat. "Every wolf in that room was taken by the Oath, and you were not. I have watched four hundred recruits sworn. I know what it looks like when the chain closes."

My hands went tight.

"Are you going to report me?"

"I haven't decided."

I stared at him.

He looked back at me, level and tired, and I had no idea what he was thinking.

"Why not?"

"Because you came down late, and a bound wolf is never late." He rubbed his jaw. "If Tolley noticed, someone else will. So you're going to learn to be on time."

"You're going to teach me."

"I'm going to teach you to look like everyone else."

That was the strangest sentence anyone had ever said to me.

I laughed, once, because I couldn't stop it.

"Fine," I said. "How?"

He moved in front of me and told me what the Oath did.

He didn't say it the way the sergeant had.

He said it plainly, to my face.

"A spoken order from your chain goes in through the ears and lands in the body first," he said. "The legs move. The arm goes up. The mouth says yes. Then, a moment later, your mind catches up and tells you that you chose it."

"That's horrible," I said.

"It's efficient."

"Is that what it's like for you?"
