Chapter 7: Dree Crossing

The Fenmark came across the Dree before dawn the next morning, forty of them, in wolf form, through the black water of the ford.

The alarm horn went off while I was still asleep.

I was on my feet and into my boots before I knew I was awake.

"Ninth to the ford!" Sergeant Tolley roared down the length of the barracks. "Recruits to the east wall! Anyone who goes near the water answers to me!"

The old hands went past us at a run, shifting as they went.

I saw Commander Stane go by in the doorway, one second a tall man with his coat unbuttoned and the next a huge storm-grey wolf with a scar over his shoulder.

Then the recruits were hustled up onto the east wall, thirty of us in a shivering row with spears we barely knew how to hold.

The ford lay below us in the grey light.

I could see the whole fight from there.

The Fenmark came in a wedge, rough-coated wolves with flat, blank eyes, and they didn't howl or snarl.

They simply came.

The Ninth met them in the shallows.

The noise reached us a heartbeat later, a deep wet crash of teeth and bodies, and Wick grabbed my arm.

"They're not stopping," he said. "Look at them. Morcant, they don't even look scared."

"They've got war-chains," said the recruit on my other side. "The Fenmark warlord ties them. They can't turn back."

I watched a raider take a bite across the ribs and keep coming.

It was the Oath, I thought.

It was the same cruel thing, and someone had done it to them too.

The wedge hit the Ninth's line, and the line bent.

Sergeant Tolley's voice cracked across the wall: "Reserve! Down to the bank! Every spear!"

We went down the stairs in a rush.
