Chapter 16: The Truth for One Person

I could have lied.

I'd been lying since October, and I'd gotten good at it.

A feeling. A dream. A girl at school whose aunt had the same thing.

I looked at him on the step, under the dead camera, and I couldn't make my mouth do it.

"I can't tell you," I said.

"Can't, or won't?"

"Both."

He came down another step.

"Marisol, I'm asking because I owe you her life. I'd like to know how."

"You don't owe me anything," I said. "You said so yourself. Two minutes ago."

He stopped.

Something almost a smile went across his face and was gone.

"Will you ever tell me?"

"No," I said. "I don't think I will."

I walked to my car.

He let me go, and he didn't ask again.

Driving home, I understood something I'd been avoiding for five months.

I had carried this alone through two lives.

If I didn't put it down somewhere, it was going to keep making me lie to the people I loved.

There was one person I could tell.

The worst liar in San Diego.
