Chapter 24: Godmother
"Put her on," I said. "Esteban. Put the phone by her ear."
There was a clatter, a nurse's voice, a machine beeping.
Then Jocelyn, breathing like she'd run up fourteen concrete stairs.
"Mari?"
"I'm here."
"It's a month early. I didn't pack. I only have Tuesday."
"Then wear Tuesday."
She laughed, and the laugh turned into a long, low sound I felt in my own stomach.
Abel was already up, pulling on his jeans, looking up flights on his laptop.
There was nothing until noon.
I sat on the floor of our flat in his flannel shirt with the phone against my ear for two hours and twenty minutes.
I breathed with her.
I told her about the yes and the cake and the three pigeons.
Esteban came on the line twice to say "She's doing great," in a voice that said he was not.
At 6:31 in the morning London time, she screamed my name and then the whole world went quiet.
Then a thin, furious cry.
"Girl," Esteban said. He was crying so hard I could barely understand him. "It's a girl. She's small. She's breathing. She's loud."
