Chapter 15: The Trade

The president of the Gallow Kings came down the catwalk stairs without hurrying.

Twelve of his men came out of the dark behind him and spread along the walls.

The Crows closed in around me, vests to my back, and for a long breath nobody in the building fired.

Hank lowered his shotgun an inch.

"Count them," the president said, pleasantly. "Twelve of mine, ten of yours. Nobody here walks out clean if this goes wrong, and nobody wants it to go wrong in a place with one door."

"Then say what you want," Boone said.

"You."

"That's off the table."

"Then the next thing." The president looked past Boone's shoulder at me. "Miss Dorsett."

I had not given him my name.

"You're the nurse who stopped my bullet," he said. "I'd have liked to meet you in better circumstances."

"I'd have liked to be somewhere else," I said.

"I'm told you hold your father's land."

I frowned.

"What land?"

He tilted his head, and I saw him enjoy it.

"The lot on the river road," he said. "Dorsett Salvage. Your father bought it in 1998 and left it to you when he died. Mr. Kessling's shop has rented it from the estate for six years."

Boone turned his head to look at me.

His face was quite blank.

"I didn't know that," I said.

"I know you didn't," the president said. "Your boyfriend knew. The rent came into an account he managed, and he saw the name of the payer." He nodded to Carl, still kneeling. "He told your stepbrother, who told me."
