Chapter 16: Not a Debt

The Crows rode home in a close pack, with me on the back of Boone's bike and no one talking.

Hank handed me my phone at the clubhouse door.

Carl's friend had dropped it in a crate, and the screen was cracked down the middle.

"Eat something," Hank said. "Sleep. Saturday is two days away."

"I'll eat," I said.

Boone took me upstairs by the hand.

He did not say a word until his door was shut and locked behind us.

Then he turned me by the shoulders and looked at me.

"I didn't know whose land it was," he said.

"I know."

"Six years I've paid that rent. I thought it was a dead man's estate and a lawyer's name."

"It was my father's."

"If I'd known," Boone said, "I'd have driven to the hospital and told you the first week."

"Boone."

"You think I stayed on that sidewalk for the lot."

"I did, for about a minute," I said. "In the warehouse."

He flinched.

"I thought maybe you looked at me and saw a deed," I said. "Something you had to pay back and keep an eye on. A debt with a heartbeat."

"Laney."

"That's what I thought all week. That you'd be kind to me until you'd paid for the bullet, and then you'd stop."

His hands tightened on my shoulders.

"You're not a debt," he said. "You never were."

"Say it plainer."

"I don't owe you for the bullet," Boone said. "I'd have wanted you before it."

"Boone."

"I watched you cross that street crying with your bag on your shoulder, and I wanted to take the weight off you. That was before anyone fired. That's why I looked."
