Boone's POV

Trent Mallory was on his knees on a showroom floor, holding the hem of my cut.

I took it out of his hand.

"Get up," I said.

He got up.

"You don't get my roof," I said. "You get a chair in my kitchen and a man at the door."

"Thank you."

"In the morning you get a detective, and you tell him everything you told her."

"Okay."

"Every name."

"Okay. Okay. Yes."

Laney stood behind me, and she did not say a word.

When I looked for Carl, the back door of the showroom was swinging on its hinge.

Hank saw it too.

"The Kings' president didn't want him," Hank said, low. "So who does?"

I did not have an answer.

By nine that night, Trent was asleep in the storeroom with a Crow outside the door.

I stood alone in the dark kitchen with a mug of coffee going cold, thinking about a woman who had walked into a room of killers and bargained with them.

I had known for a week she was brave.

I had not known she would be better at this than I was.

Hank came in and sat across from me.

"The Kings' second wasn't at the Legion hall," he said.

"I noticed."

"He'll have heard what the Kings' president gave away. The lot. The peace. Twenty-nine thousand."

"The Kings' president gave it up for her."

"He gave it up because she scared him," Hank said. "A man scared by a nurse doesn't forgive it."

"And the man who works for him?"

"Doesn't either."

"You think the second will move."

"I think he already has."

I rubbed my face.

"Go to bed, Hank."
