Chapter 11: The Elevator

Maddie's POV

The children's hospital gala was my first event at Kincaid, and I did not see the final guest list until six o'clock.

I read it in the ballroom foyer, with the florists behind me and the string quartet tuning up.

Under the sponsors, third from the top, was a line that made my stomach drop.

Aldine Hospitality. Host: Hayes MacIntyre.

"Regan."

She came over with a clipboard, took one look at my face and put the clipboard down.

"Who put him on the list?" I said.

"The chairman's office. They closed the sponsorship last month, two tables for the children's hospital. It's six figures, Maddie. We needed it." She read the line and swore softly. "Nobody told me the host was him."

"Nobody told me, either."

"I can pull you off the floor tonight. You can stay in the office."

I looked at the florists, and the quartet, and the long tables I had drawn myself.

"No," I said. "I'm not hiding in my own event."

Regan studied me.

"Okay," she said. "Then you don't go anywhere alone. Deal?"

"Deal."

At seven-fifteen the guests were filling the lobby, and Regan had been called away by the head chef.

I took the service elevator to thirty for the final run sheets.

I stepped in, and a hand caught the door.
