Chapter 15: The Board

The board of Lowell Logistics met on the thirty-first floor at nine, around a table of black glass.

I sat in a chair against the wall, because Harvey had asked me to come and Clarence had said, "Sit where they'll have to look at you."

A room full of people in suits looked at me.

Then they looked at Harvey, who stood at the head of the table with no papers at all.

"Daphne's father sold his stock at six this morning," he said. "We lost the Denver contract before lunch. I did that. It was my decision and I'd make it again."

A man halfway down the table said, "Then you've gone mad."

"Maybe. I want to tell you why."

He put both hands on the glass.

"You have read the papers. I'm going to give you the part they don't have, and I want it in the minutes."

Nobody breathed.

"The woman was Cassia Hollander. She's sitting behind you. I did most of it. I proposed and I let her order a dress, and I meant to leave her in it. Daphne Wakefield wrote the stake. I believed Daphne's story that Cassia was a thief. I never checked it. I never asked her one question."

His mother sat at the far end of the table in a navy suit.

Her face had gone the color of paper.

"Harvey," she said. "Stop."

"No."

"You are describing a crime to the board."

"I'm describing what I did." He turned and looked straight at her. "You sat at that dinner and heard Daphne call Cassia a thief to her face, and I let you. I let all of you. The woman who drew the painting I've kept for five years is the woman I humiliated. I'm resigning as chief executive today."

The man who had called him mad said, "You can't."

"I can. Grandfather will take the chair back until you find someone better."
