Chapter 24: Torvin's Lane
I woke with a Dar arm across my ribs and nowhere I had to be.
Havrik lay on his back with his eyes open, looking at the ceiling.
He had the stillness of a man who has held a position for hours so as not to disturb something.
"How long have you been awake?" I said.
"Since the ship clock said five."
"It's nine."
"I did not want to waste it."
I laughed into his shoulder and handed him the folded page from the pillow.
He read it with his lips moving slightly.
One. I captain. You sit second seat.
Two. Nobody pays for anything between us.
Three. Either of us can leave by any airlock, and neither of us will.
Four. Breakfast is served in bed.
Five. Torvin's lane is signed by both.
He read the last line three times.
"Both?" he said.
"Quintana and Tolen-Dar. I'm not charting it alone."
His seams came up slowly, warm gold along his throat.
He put the page on his chest.
"Term four," he said. "Who serves the breakfast?"
"You do."
"I do not cook."
"Then it'll be a very short meal."
He got up and found Dar bread, salted butter and a jar of black fruit jam.
He carried them back on a tray with the gravity of a man bearing a crown.
