Chapter 19: The Club

Petra stood up from her crouch very slowly.

"September," she said.

"The second week. I remember because I'd just booked the cake."

"Two years I had lunch with him, Mum. Two years he talked about Ness."

"He asked me to marry him at the end of September. A week after your phone call."

Her voice was flat and careful.

"I thought I took him. I thought I was so clever."

She laughed, and it wasn't her big laugh. It was small and dreadful.

"They weren't choosing me. They were choosing the house."

Her mother reached for her hand. Petra stepped back out of reach.

"I thought it was me," Petra said to me. "It was a valuation."

I didn't say anything. There wasn't anything that wouldn't sound like I'd won.

Petra picked the navy folder up off the glass table.

"He has lunch at his club every Monday," she said. "With the rugby lot and two of the partners from the new company."
