Chapter 19: The Old Law

Hamish's POV

Four wardens came off the dais at the Alpha's nod.

I stepped in front of Yvaine before the first of them reached her.

"Touch her and I'll treat it as a war," I said.

"She's Cedarvale's by contract," the Alpha said. "You have no standing here, Rathbone."

"I have a guest."

"She is not your guest. She is my son's rightful mate."

"She is mine," I said.

I had not meant to say it out loud, in that hall.

It sounded exactly as true as it felt.

Yvaine's fingers tightened in mine.

I did not look at her, because if I did I would lose the thread of what I was about to do.

"By the old law," I said, "an Alpha may challenge another Alpha over a woman under his protection. The one who yields gives her up, and the one who stands keeps her."

The Alpha stared at me.

"That law has not been called in sixty years."

"It was never repealed."

An elder in the front row stood up slowly.

"It was never repealed," she said. "He has the right."

"Then you'll answer it," I said to the Alpha. "In the yard. Now. Before your own pack."

I could see him weigh it.

He was fifty-eight, and he had been stronger than I was for most of my life.

But his son lay shaking on the dais, and the strength he had counted on was draining out of his house.

He had to know it, as well as I did.

"Very well," he said. "In the yard."
