Chapter 17: Hands

"Take it off," I said.

Gio was already pulling the tie loose from his collar.

It was dark blue silk, and he had worn it to the lawyer's office and nowhere else.

We stood in the pool house in the blue light from under the water.

The glass roof was black above us, and the snow ticked on it.

The sauna door stood open behind him, breathing steam.

I had asked him to bring me here.

I had asked for the thing I wanted in the car, with the heater on and Aune's fish soup warm in my stomach.

I had said it in a voice I hardly knew.

He had pulled over on the shoulder of Highway 61 and put his head against the steering wheel.

"Say it again," he had said.

I had said it again.

Now he held the tie out across his two palms.

"Wrists," he said.

"Not yet," I said.

I took the tie from him and turned it over in my hands.

"First I want you to take everything else off."

He did.

He took off the overcoat and the jacket and the shirt, and the anchor over his heart rose and fell with his breathing.

He stood barefoot on the warm tile, and I looked at him for a long time.

I walked all the way around him.

I put my mouth on the long white scar over his ribs and felt him tremble.

I stood behind him and pressed my open hand flat between his shoulder blades.

"You don't move until I say," I said.

"Yes," he said.

"You don't touch me."

"Yes," he said.

"Even if you want to," I said.

"Raisa," he said, and it was almost a laugh.

"I always want to."

I came around to the front.
