Chapter 21: Sixty at the Table

Lorenzo's truck was gone by the time Gio had his boots on.

It had only wanted us to know it had been there.

Saturday came anyway.

At six that evening Aune sat beside me in the gray Subaru in a plain black wool dress.

She wore a silver brooch she had not worn in twenty-seven years.

Her braid was pinned up, and her hands lay folded in her lap.

She had barely spoken since we left the North Shore.

"I have not been in that house," she said, as we turned onto Skyline Parkway.

"I've never been through the front door."

"You'll go through it with me," I said.

"On your arm," Aune said.

"On my arm."

Gio waited for us on the steps in a black suit and no tie, because I had asked him not to wear one.

He took Aune's other arm without a word.

The three of us walked in through the front door of the Brandisi house together.

The dining room table had been stretched to its full length.

It seated sixty, in white linen and silver and cut crystal, with candles down the middle.

The priest sat at the foot in his black collar.

Every seat was filled but three.

I walked the length of the room in the green dress and my own boots, with my braid over one shoulder.

Every head turned.

I saw the six old men from the yard in a row near the middle.
