Chapter 24: The Name on the Door
The ice went out of the harbor on the ninth of April, with a long groaning crack that carried across the whole yard.
I stood on the ramp at dawn in my father's work boots, seven months pregnant, and watched the lake open its black mouth and start to move.
The gray plates broke and ground and rode up over each other against the pilings.
Behind me, in the old tow yard on the lake side, the sign went up.
It was a plain white board on two posts, hand-lettered.
It said SAARI TOWING, NIGHT AND DAY.
Gio stood on a stepladder with a hammer and three nails in his teeth.
"Hold it straight," he said around them.
"It is straight."
"It isn't."
"It's straight, Gio.
"The lake is crooked."
He took the nails out of his mouth and looked at me from the ladder.
His face was ten years younger than the one on the dock.
"Whose name did you want first?" he said.
"On the sign?"
"On the truck," I said.
I walked around the front of the cream-and-brown 1994 flatbed that Arvo Kaarlela had rebuilt for eleven years.
It sat on the gravel with the sun on its hood and a new coat of clear on the paint.
On the driver's door, in neat black letters the sign painter had finished the day before, it said R. SAARI.
Below that, in smaller letters, it said TRUCK 6.
"That's it," I said.
"That's the one."
"You didn't want your own name on the sign?"
"I did," I said.
"It's Eino's, and it's mine.
"In nine weeks it's going to be somebody else's too.
"It's the first thing I've ever owned that nobody gave me."
Gio came down off the ladder and set his hammer on the bumper.
