Raisa's POV
The family doctor kept an office in a brick house on East Superior Street with no sign on the door.
Gio sat in the waiting room in a chair too small for him, with his coat on his knee.
He did not read a magazine.
He watched the door the way he watched the yard gate, and every time it opened, his hand closed over mine on the armrest.
I let it.
I told myself it was for show.
The nurse called my name, and he stood when I did.
"You can wait here," I said.
"No."
"It's an ultrasound, Gio.
"It's a wand and a screen."
"I know what it is," he said.
"I'm coming in."
He came in.
He stood at the head of the exam table with his arms crossed and his jaw tight, and he did not look at the screen until the doctor turned it.
The doctor was a thin gray man who had delivered half of Duluth's first families and who did not smile.
He pressed the wand against my stomach and a gray shape bloomed on the monitor.
A small curve, a flicker in the middle of it.
