Chapter 21: The Roof
The service stair ran twenty-two floors up the back of the hotel.
We took it two steps at a time.
Roark went first, one hand on the rail.
He didn't look at the numbers painted on the landings.
He counted the sound of Morton's shoes above us.
"Fourteen," he said. "He's slowing."
"How do you know?"
"He's fifty-eight and he's carrying a case."
Rhona had stayed in the ballroom with the auditor and the detective who had been sitting quietly in the last row all morning.
I hadn't known there was a detective.
The housekeeper had slipped him her freezer bag and said, "Don't lose it, young man," like she was talking to a dry cleaner.
Below us, a clatter of feet followed.
Not police.
The line cook, the banquet captain, the two laundry women, a dozen waiters in black and white who had stopped folding napkins.
They did not run.
They climbed in a wave, filling every landing behind us, until the stair rang with them.
"Nobody can pass us now," I said.
