Lucio's POV
Nunzio asked me again to read the first line, and I did not answer.
I sat with my hand flat on the oak and listened to fourteen men decide what I was.
The undertaker spoke first, and he spoke to the table, not to me.
"Salvatore told us the boy had a gift for numbers," he said. "Salvatore did not tell us the rest."
"He told me," said the baker. "He told me when the boy was nine."
Nobody looked at the baker.
He went on in his dry voice.
The room gave him the quiet that old men give a man who has outlived their fathers.
"The chair stays with Lucio until Christmas Eve," he said.
"On Christmas Eve the whole family sits, all fifty, and Nunzio can put his motion in front of everyone."
"Until then nobody signs a paper."
"Of course," Nunzio said gently.
He picked the deed up out of Zofia's fingers, because she let it go, and slid it into his leather folder.
"A man who is not signing does not need it," he said.
The table voted with raised hands.
I counted them by the sound of the sleeves.
