Chapter 24: Dyngus Day
On Easter Monday the whole of Slavic Village went out in the street with water.
By ten in the morning the polka band had set up on the flatbed of a truck outside the church hall.
Boys with squirt guns chased girls with pussy willow branches, and the girls swatted anyone within reach.
That is Dyngus Day, and it has been done on East 55th Street since before my grandmother was born.
My father stood on his porch with a bucket and no cane.
His hip had been replaced in January.
He stood on the third step with his full weight on it and a look of enormous contentment.
"Zosia," he called, "come and see the family."
The family was crowded on the porch behind him.
Pia sat on the railing in her Buckeyes sweatshirt with a diploma tube sticking out of her bag, because she would finish in May.
The baker sat in a lawn chair with a plate of pierogi on his knee.
Two of his nephews leaned against the posts, soaked to the skin.
