Chapter 5: Kneel

Brigid's POV

I was awake when he came down, and I watched the Alpha of Greyfen put his forehead on the stone.

The guards on the stairs shifted their boots.

One of them said "Alpha?" and got no answer.

"Get up," I said.

"No."

His voice was muffled against the floor.

"Get up, Kellan. I won't talk to a man's hair."

He sat back on his heels.

There was a mark on his forehead from the stone, and his eyes were red to the rims.

He held something out between the bars, wrapped in a handkerchief.

I knew its weight before I touched it.

The anklet was cold from being in his shirt, and a little leaf charm lay in my palm.

My fingers closed over it.

I had bought it at the autumn fair for four dollars, and Nessa had worn it every day until the creek.

I did not cry.

I had not cried in fifteen years, and I did not know where it would come from.

"I'm sorry," Kellan said.

"Don't."

"Brigid."

"I said don't." I closed my eyes. "Sorry is cheap. You'll want to say it every day. Don't."

He took a breath.

"I found it where you said. My father kept it in the same drawer as my mother's ring."

"Yes."

"I should have come for you."

I opened my eyes.

"You never came," I said.

He did not answer.

"Not once. Fifteen years, and you were four miles away every one of them. I stood at the treeline below the orchard on your birthday every year and watched you blow out the candles through the window."

I heard the guard on the stairs go still.

"I never let you see me," I said. "I thought if you saw me, you'd have to choose."

"I thought you chose him." His voice broke on it. "They told me you knew who it was and would not say. I believed it for fifteen years."

"I let you."

"You should have hit me. You should have screamed it in the middle of the hall."
