Chapter 9: Alpha's Letter

The letter from my father arrived by courier before noon.

It was cream paper with the Ironwood crest pressed into the wax, and it was addressed to the Warden, not to me.

Ivo read it standing at the window.

He read it twice, and then he handed it to me without a word.

"Under Territory law, an unmated daughter who is not ranked above Beta remains in her Alpha's keeping," I read aloud. "Her father may recall her at any time."

"It's an old statute," Ivo said. "Nobody has used it in a generation."

"My father has."

"Your father has also asked the registrar for your sealed file. He wants to know what rank you're hiding."

"He knows my score."

"He knows nine hundred and twelve." Ivo turned from the window. "But he wants the file."

I frowned. "Why would he want the file when he already has the score?"

"I don't know."

He said it plainly, and I believed him.

I did not ask whether he had read the file himself.

It was a coward's choice, and I made it anyway.

"The recall only works if you're unmated and unranked," he said. "There's a way around that."

"What way?"

"A paper mating."

I stared at him.

"Registered at the clerk's office. Signed by both of us. Pack law treats a mated wolf as her own house. Your father couldn't touch you."

My chest went tight.

"So you want to marry me for a form."

"I want to keep you here. The form is a tool."

"Do you want to marry me?"
