Chapter 24: The Wedding Night
The shrine stood in a side street of Asakusa behind a stand of ginkgos gone yellow.
It was small enough that a dozen people filled it.
The priest wore white and green.
A girl in a red hakama carried a tray, and the wooden floor creaked under every step.
Shiori wore a white kimono with a hood.
Tatsuya wore a black montsuki with no crest, because he had none now.
When he came in through the door of the hall, she saw the ink at his wrists above the sleeves.
Her stomach turned over.
Nobody bowed to him.
Sakaki sat in the second row in a rented suit, with a handkerchief already in his fist.
Shiori's mother sat in the first, in her good grey kimono, straight as a pillar.
The priest raised the red lacquer cup and filled it with sake.
It was the same shape as the cup in the main hall in Azabu.
Shiori felt Tatsuya go rigid beside her.
"Three sips," the priest said, kindly. "Three cups. The groom first."
Tatsuya took the cup in both hands.
He looked into it.
Then he turned his head and looked at Shiori, and his black eyes had gone soft and bright.
He drank.
He passed the cup to her, and she drank, and the sake ran down her throat like warm light.
They drank three cups each, three sips each, until the priest said it was done.
Her husband took her left hand in his and slid the ring onto her finger.
