The main hall of the Azabu house held thirty-one men on their knees.
They knelt in two long rows down the tatami with their hands on their thighs, branch chiefs in black suits and grey kimono, with scars and missing finger joints and gold watches.
Every one of them turned to look at Shiori as she came in.
Tatsuya walked in front.
She walked a half step behind him, in a black dress with her hair pinned up and her badge back in her handbag.
Her knees did not shake.
They knelt side by side on two cushions below the dais.
The old man sat above them on a plain mat, in his grey kimono, with a lacquer tray in front of him.
On the tray lay a single sheet of paper and a brush.
"Brothers," said Genichiro, and the room went silent. "You have all met my daughter."
Thirty-one heads bowed to Shiori.
She bowed back, from the waist, and she made it as deep as theirs.
"Last year the Prosecutor's office charged my son with extortion," the old man went on, gently. "You remember. The court found no case. Since then, my daughter has joined our family, and we thank her for it."
A soft murmur went down the rows.
"But a family has to be kept in order. And a man should hold something in his own name." Genichiro touched the sheet of paper. "Marukawa Trading, in Chiba. It has been looked after by others for years. Today I give it to my son."
