Kyoko Hirano took the corner table in a hotel tea lounge forty minutes from her office, with her back to the wall and her reading glasses on their cord.

She looked at Shiori's phone for a long time.

She scrolled with one finger, page after page, and her face did not change.

"Where did you get these?"

"I'd rather not say."

"Then I'd rather not ask." Hirano slid the phone back across the cloth. "They're real. I had a friend in the Chiba legal bureau pull the registration this morning. The nominee director died two years ago in a hospital in Funabashi, the signature on the invoice is from after his death, and the clerk who processed it bought a house in Kamakura the week after."

"That's the money trail."

"That's half. It proves the company is a front." She turned her cup in the saucer. "To prove who is putting the money into it, I need the ledger. Genichiro's own hand. Without that, every one of these pages points at whoever's name is on the registration."

"Which is Tatsuya's."

"As of yesterday morning."

She said it flatly, and watched Shiori.

Shiori had not told her that.

"A filing came across my desk at nine," said Hirano. "I do read the Chiba bureau, Takamura. It's my job."

Shiori sat with her hands under the table.
