Chapter 12: The Bait

I woke my brother with the phone.

I held it two inches from his face and let the screen light up his closed eyes.

He opened them, saw what I was holding and went the color of paper.

"Ro."

"Sit up."

He sat up.

The blanket slid off his shoulders, and Mal stood by the window with his arms folded and said nothing at all.

"It's a game," said Donal quickly. "I was playing him. I was getting close to Padraig so I could find out where."

"Read me the last message."

"Ro, I swear."

"Read it, Donal."

He stared at the screen, and his mouth opened and closed.

"Send them at nine," I read for him.

My voice didn't shake.

It surprised me.

"That is your number, Donal."

"I didn't," he said, and then he started to cry.

It was ugly crying, loud and gasping, the way he cried at five when our mother died.

"He swore you'd walk," he said. "He swore nobody would ever know it was me."
