Chapter 15: The Poisoned Cup

Kit opened his mouth, and the stairwell door banged open below them.

"Majesty." It was Dorrie, red in the face from the climb. "The council sits down to supper in an hour. Every one of them, and the outer packs."

"Not tonight."

"If you're not at the head of that table, they'll say you've lost your nerve." She looked at Kit, at his split lip and the blood in his hair. "And they'll say it with him bleeding in the hall."

Ewan's jaw worked.

His hand stayed on Kit's neck, and he did not look away from Kit's face.

"After," Kit said.

"Kit."

"After supper, all of it. I swear it on his grave."

The gold in Ewan's eyes flickered.

"On whose?"

"Both of them."

Ewan's shoulders lowered.

"After," he said. "And you eat nothing you haven't watched Dorrie pour."

The great hall blazed with candles.

Fifty wolves sat down along two tables, and the councillors took the high seats under the black beams.

Ewan sat at the head with Kit at his right hand, in a clean shirt with a collar that did not hide the split in his lip.

Garth stood behind the king's chair.

Kit ate the stew Dorrie ladled for him and drank water from a jug she carried herself.

He smelled the bitter leaf on every wolf at the high table now.

It was all over the room.

That should have warned him, and later he would think so.
