Chapter 16: The Smile

Ewan did not say a word.

He lifted Kit out of the water, wrapped him in a blanket Dorrie had left on the ledge, and sat down with him on the warm stone.

Kit sat between his knees with his back against his chest.

He could not have said the rest of it to that face.

Ewan seemed to know it.

"Go on," he said, quietly, into Kit's wet hair.

Kit looked at the black water.

"He sent for me," he said. "Three years ago, in the first hard frost. A rogue broker brought a message and a purse of gold."

"My father."

"He wanted a tracker to meet him at the Spruce Gap at dawn. Alone. No pack."

"I was twenty-two. I thought it was a job."

"I took the job."

Ewan's chest rose and fell against his back, slow and careful.

"He was already there when I came," Kit said. "He was sitting on a fallen log with his coat open in the snow."

"He looked like a man who'd been sick for a year. I didn't know who he was until he said his name."

"What did he say?"

"He said somebody at his table had been feeding him poison for three years." Kit swallowed. "He could smell it in his own sweat."
