Chapter 17: Mated

Kit slept for a night and a day in the east-wing bed with the door open and the king in a chair beside it.

On the second evening he woke hungry, and Ewan fed him soup from a spoon without being asked.

"I can hold a spoon," Kit said.

"I know."

"You're not letting me."

"No."

Kit ate the soup.

The black lines had gone from his neck, and the room was warm and dark, and snow ticked on the window glass.

Ewan put the bowl on the floor.

He sat on the edge of the mattress with his big hands hanging between his knees, and he did not look up.

"I've been thinking about him all day," he said. "About the smile."

"I know."

"I used to hate it. I'd see it when I shut my eyes." His voice was steady, and it took effort. "Now I think it was the last good thing he did."

"It was."

"He should have asked me."

"He couldn't. You'd have said yes."

Ewan breathed out something close to a laugh.

"I would have," he said. "And then I'd have been the one."

"That's why."

"I know why."

He lifted his head.

His eyes were red-rimmed and dark, and the lamplight caught the gold in them.

"I don't want to talk about him anymore tonight," he said.

"What do you want?"

"You."

It was said plainly.

Kit pushed the blanket back.

He was naked underneath it, and Ewan's gaze went over him, slow, and stopped at the pink scar on his shoulder and the thin ring around his throat.
