Chapter 16: The Harbour Master
The flashlight belonged to the night watchman.
He stopped at the end of the oar rack with the beam pointed at the dock boards.
"Dr. Reinholt," he said.
"Miss Gundersen."
"Good evening," Elias said.
He had one hand on my arm and his collar up and his hair soaked flat.
He stood as if he had been inspecting the oars.
The watchman looked at the rack, and at the slot behind it, and at the rain.
He kept his light pointed down.
"The dean said to tell you," he said.
"She said you're expected at the council on Thursday at nine."
"Both of us?" Elias said.
"She didn't say both," the watchman said.
"Thank you," Elias said.
The watchman nodded and walked back down the dock with his light on his boots.
When he was gone I started to laugh, silently, into Elias's sleeve.
"He knew," I said.
"He's known since the stair," Elias said.
"He is the quietest man on the island, and he has not told a living soul in nineteen years."
He kissed my wet hair.
"Thursday at nine," I said.
"A council that meets on a Thursday has a vote," Elias said.
"She wants us in a room where she counts the hands."
"Then we don't go," I said.
"We have a ferry in the morning."
The first ferry to Lopez left at seven.
We rode it in the gray light, standing on the open deck with a thermos of stew between us.
Freya met us at the Lopez landing in her rescue-squad fleece, with her curls under a knit cap and a grin on her face.
