Chapter 24: December

The storm came in over Rosario Strait at dusk on the first of December, and by dark it had the whole island by the roof.

I stood at the kitchen window of the last cedar house on faculty row, with a pan of my mother's lefse warming on the stove.

Rain went sideways across the glass.

The seawall was a line of white water, and the channel beyond it was black and furious.

Every light on the island flickered once and held.

Elias came in from the porch with the wind still on him.

He had stacked a week of cedar by the door.

He shook the rain off his shoulders and stood on the mat and looked at me.

I was in his gray sweater and nothing under it, with a spatula in my hand.

"The ferry's cancelled until Thursday," he said.

"Good," I said.

"The far end of the row has no power."

"We have power," I said.

"We have the stove and the lamp and a cord of wood, and I have a very large plate of lefse."

"Then I'm a lucky man," he said.

"You're a very lucky man," I said.

"I'm going to ask you something, but not tonight," he said.

"Tomorrow, in daylight."

"With the dean in a mainland courtroom and my father on the Marit," I said.

"And Freya in the loft with a camera, because she insists."

He laughed.

"Tomorrow, then," he said.

He crossed the kitchen and took the spatula out of my hand.

He set it on the counter and put both hands on my face.

"Tonight I would like to take you upstairs," he said.

"Slowly, for a long time.

"I would like to do every one of the things we've done in a hurry since the dock.

"And I would like to do them without a flashlight on the stair."

"There's no flashlight," I said.

"There's a storm," he said.

"Nobody walks down in this."

"You remembered," I said.

"I remember everything you say," he said.

I turned the stove off.

He carried me up the narrow stair.

The skylight over the bed was a drum, loud with rain.

The brass lamp threw its gold circle across the quilt.

He set me on my feet beside the bed and stood back and looked at me in the light.
