Chapter 37: The Sign

The bank called the Pettengill note in the second week of January.

The Ouellette Boatworks yard went on the courthouse steps the first Saturday in March.

I had never stood in snow to buy a boatyard.

Eighty-three of us came to the steps of the Knox County courthouse in Rockland at ten o'clock, in boots and parkas, with our breath going up.

The bearded lobsterman had a clipboard.

Fern had a thermos and a folder tied with string.

Ansel stood at my shoulder in his good wool coat with his hands in his pockets.

"Nervous?" he said.

"I'm going to be sick."

"That's the right amount," he said.

"You've done this before?"

"I've watched a lot of boats get bought," he said. "It's mostly standing."

The auctioneer, a thin man in a fur hat, climbed onto the second step and read the notice in a bored voice.

"One parcel, improved, with structures and a marine railway, formerly known as Ouellette Boatworks. Port Gannet, Maine. Bidders must show a deposit."

Across the steps, near the street, stood the other bidders.
