Chapter 6: Only Tonight

His car was in the far corner of the Birchwood lot, under a dead light.

He didn't start the engine.

He turned in the driver's seat, and I was already across the console, and his mouth came down on mine hard enough to hurt.

Two years.

I tasted coffee and cold air and him.

My hands went into his hair.

His went under my coat, under my scrubs, and flattened against my bare back, and I made the noise.

I heard myself make it.

He heard it too.

"There," Eli said against my mouth. "That one."

"Shut up."

"I've been hearing it for two years."

"Drive."

"Not yet."

He got my coat off my shoulders and pushed my top up.

His mouth found the side of my neck exactly where he'd promised.

I dragged his shirt out of his belt.

His skin was hot, and the muscle in his stomach jumped under my palm.

"My place is ten minutes," he said, breathing hard. "I'm not doing this in a parking lot."

"You are not the boss of this."

"Hannah."

"Ten minutes."

He drove with one hand and kept the other high on my thigh, his thumb pressing the seam of my pants.

I sat with my head back and my eyes shut and counted red lights.

His loft was on the fourth floor of an old brick warehouse.

He got the door open, got me through it, and shut it with my back against it.

The key hit the floor.

Neither of us picked it up.

"Tell me you want this," he said.

"I'm here."

"Say it."

"I want you to fuck me, Eli."

His breath left him.

He took my face in both hands and kissed me slowly this time, and I felt how badly he was holding himself back.

Then he stopped holding.

He stripped my scrubs off me right there in the entry, top and pants and the rest, and dropped them on the floorboards.
