Chapter 4: Good
On Saturday morning I learned the rules of Yara Karam.
She drank from the red cup, and only the red cup.
She wore no socks, ever, and no shoes until the door was open.
She ate bread without crusts and labneh without a spoon.
Nobody sat in the chair beside hers unless she chose them.
At seven-thirty she chose me.
She pushed the chair out with her whole body and pointed at the seat, and the housekeeper looked at the ceiling and crossed herself.
I sat.
Yara put her red cup in my hand and watched me hold it.
"You're being tested," Marwan said, from the counter, where he was eating a folded flatbread on his feet.
"I know," I said.
"She tested the last nanny with a spoon. The nanny left before lunch."
"What was the spoon for?" I asked.
"Nothing. She just kept hitting her with it."
I drank from the red cup, slowly, and handed it back.
Yara considered me, and then she put a piece of crustless bread in my mouth with her fingers.
I chewed it.
Marwan looked away from us, very fast, at the window.
His phone buzzed against the counter, and he looked at it and his face closed.
"It's him," he said.
"My husband?"
"His father."
He held it out to me, face up, so I could see the name.
The name on it was Yousif.
My hands went cold, and I put the red cup down.
"You said every call from his house goes to you," I said.
"Yes. You can listen or you can go upstairs. Tell me which."
"I'll listen."
He pressed the speaker and set the phone on the counter between us.
"Karam," said Yousif Sarafa.
His voice was soft and unhurried, the one he used at church fundraisers.
"Sarafa," Marwan said.
"You are holding my son's wife. You are also holding my daughter's child. I will say this once and with respect. My son is in a hospital in Royal Oak, on a machine, because of what his wife did to him."
