Chapter 8: Barbara's Eve
Nahla's POV
On the eve of St. Barbara's, children in paper masks came up the walk of Marwan's uncle's house in Dearborn Heights.
They stood on the step and sang for sweets.
Marwan's aunt held the door with a pot of boiled wheat, sugar, pomegranate seeds and walnuts.
She gave each child a spoonful in a cup.
Yara hid behind my legs and watched, and did not bite anyone.
"Progress," Marwan said, in my ear.
"She's saving it."
By seven Yara was asleep on a sofa in the next room, under the housekeeper's shawl.
His uncle's dining room seated twenty.
There were aunts in good black dresses, cousins in suits, an old man who didn't speak, and a long table covered in dishes.
I wore the green dress his housekeeper had taken in at the waist.
Marwan sat across the table and a little down, where I could see him, with his coat off and his jaw set.
His uncle was at the head.
He was sixty-six, with a silver mustache and reading glasses on a chain, and he held the books for the family.
