Chapter 21: The Duck

Lou was sitting up in my childhood bed with the nightlight on and her alligator in a headlock.

Mémère stood in the doorway in her robe, leaning on the Contraption.

"She wouldn't go back to sleep," she said. "She says she has to ask you a thing."

"Is she sick?"

"She's five," said Mémère. "It's the same."

Gabe stayed in the hall with his hands in his pockets.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and put my palm on Lou's forehead.

It was cool.

"What's the matter, baby?"

"I had a dream about the big house," she said. "The duck was talking."

"What did the duck say?"

"He said you were a liar."

I looked at my grandmother over her head.

She looked at the floor.

"Mama," Lou said. "Is it true?"

I had known this question was coming since the supper.

I'd rehearsed my answer in the car, and in the shower, and when Gabe's mouth was on my neck.
