Chapter 13: What He Signed

Nobody spoke in the lilac room.

Magda stood in the doorway with her scarf in her hands.

The watchman looked at his boots.

Ansel had not moved from the threshold.

"Tell me," I said. "Here. Now. All of it."

"Neve," he said.

"You said it's true. So tell me what's true."

He came into the room slowly, as if the floor might not hold him.

He stopped beside the narrow bed and put one hand on the patchwork cover.

"The night Marta died, I signed the donation form," he said. "I told you that."

"You told me you signed her away."

"I told you wrong. It was the hardest thing I have ever done, and it was right."

He looked at Magda.

"I did not know who would get it," he said. "They do not tell you. I only knew that a girl in a bed somewhere would be alive."

Magda's mouth trembled, and she said nothing.

"A year later my mother learned the name," Ansel said. "A hospital letter reached her by mistake. It said the recipient was a young woman from Polish Hill."

"And she hated that," I said.

"She could not look at it. A stranger was breathing with her daughter's heart."

He rubbed his face with one hand.

"She said it was an insult to Marta, to be given to someone who did not know her."
