Chapter 6: For Show

We were married on a Thursday morning in the Miami courthouse, in front of forty guests and a judge who kept checking his watch.

I wore a cream suit I had bought at the airport.

Luca wore grey.

His mother cried in the front row, and Luca's old uncle with the cane stood up when I walked in, which made half the room stand.

Carla arrived late and in white.

It was not a wedding dress.

It was a white silk gown with a low back and a slit up the side, and she stood in the doorway until everyone had looked.

Nunzio stood behind her with his gold watch and his thick neck, looking proud and a little confused.

"Gemma!" Carla said, and crossed the aisle with her arms out. "I couldn't miss it."

She hugged me hard.

Into my ear she said, "Don't get used to the sun."

Then she turned, still smiling, and took both of Luca's hands.

"Luca," she said, loud enough for the second row. "It's been years. You've gotten so handsome."

"Carla," Luca said.

"I always thought it would be me." She laughed, and a few people laughed with her. "Mother had two files on the table and we were all so young. It was just luck of the draw that Gemma got to you first."

I felt the room go quiet and watch me.

This was the move.

In my first life, it would have worked.

I would have blushed and apologized and let her stand next to me in every photograph.

I looked at Nunzio.

"Nunzio," I said, "thank you for bringing my sister all this way. I think she's confused about whose wedding this is."
