Chapter 20: A Rule of My Own
Claudia put my hands on the wet clay, laid her own over them, and told me to lean in with my weight.
"Not your arms," she said. "Your shoulders. Let the wheel do the arguing."
It was a Wednesday in the first week of March, and the barn behind the brick house smelled of slip and woodsmoke.
Snow melted in a gray line along the eaves.
The wheel turned under my palms with a low steady hum.
Claudia stood behind me, close enough that her breath moved my hair.
She had pulled her sleeves to the elbow, and her forearms were strong and freckled and spattered gray.
Her fingers lay over mine with the clay between them.
"Press," she said. "And don't flinch when it wobbles. It always wobbles."
It wobbled.
I pressed.
The lump of clay swung off center, and she leaned in and steadied it with the heel of her hand against mine.
Her breasts touched my back.
I felt my whole body notice.
"There," she said, softly. "Feel it find the middle?"
