Chapter 9: Ink
Nathan's POV
I keep a notebook, and for three years I had not written a word about Hannah Eberhardt in it.
I want that on the record before I tell the rest.
I notice everything.
It is my job and my affliction, and I have filled forty black notebooks with what other people did while they thought nobody was looking.
On the second Tuesday of November I let myself into the empty seminar room on the second floor at nine at night.
I put a bottle of ink and a fountain pen on the long oak table.
I turned off every light but the one over the door.
Then I sat down and waited for her to come up the stairs.
I had told her only to bring her chapter.
She came in at five past nine in her gray cardigan, with the pages against her chest, and shut the door behind her.
"Nathan."
"Hannah," I said.
"Why is it dark?"
"Because I am about to do something I swore I would never do, and I would like to do it in the right light."
She set her pages on the table.
She looked at the pen.
She looked at me.
"Oh," she said slowly.
"You noticed."
"You never put it down," she said. "You never use it on me."
"No."
"What changed?"
"The man from the third floor went to the chair yesterday morning," I said. "I heard it from the secretary."
I let that settle.
"The chair thanked him and wrote nothing down."
Hannah's face went still.
"And?"
"And by this evening she had said precisely nothing to any of us. Not to Marcello, not to Colin, not to me."
I stood.
"I have known that woman twenty years," I said. "Her silence is not nothing. It is a door left unlocked."
"So we're safe?"
"We are not in danger tonight."
I walked around the table and took her cardigan by the lapels.
